MY STORY
“I hid myself because I was a street artist,” says WhIsBe. “But I think a lot of it was because I had a lot of fear of being rejected.”
I'm hoping that people are going to experience a different visceral reaction that will maybe change their thoughts about the matter into provoking them into action.
“Artists are the worst businessmen and businessmen are the worst artists”
WhIsBe, which stands for "What is Beauty," is a contemporary artist renowned for merging the bold spirit of street art with the refined world of galleries, museums, and public installations. Known for his anonymity, he explores cultural examination and subversion, challenging traditional viewpoints with his impactful art.
A self-taught artist inspired by the likes of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, WhIsBe ventured beyond conventional art spaces in 2011, aiming to connect with a wider audience. His works, often featuring innocuous imagery laced with deep messages, provoke thoughtful discussions on social issues. His iconic Vandal Gummy series—where gummy bears appear in mugshots—illustrates this unique blend of nostalgia and critique, urging viewers to reconsider societal norms.
Throughout his career, WhIsBe has collaborated with various charities and brands, from the Art Works Charity Foundation to Red Bull and COACH. His art has been featured at prestigious events like Art Basel and Art Southampton, and in 2016, he partnered with the New Museum in New York for a significant exhibition. The following year, his work attracted media attention from Business Insider, Vice HBO, and Forbes, and he was commissioned to create a striking piece for the 69th floor of 4 World Trade Center.
In 2024, WhIsBe took a bold step by transforming his Vandal Gummy series into a tangible product—Vandal Gummy Bears candies. This exciting initiative bridges the gap between art collectors and the world of confectionery, underscoring his commitment to challenging traditional perceptions and engaging audiences in innovative and unexpected ways.
